A commissioner to the House of Assembly service commission in Imo, Tobby
Onyekele, was reportedly shot dead by suspected gunmen in front of the
MRS filling station, Orji, near Owerri.
Crime and Security
gathered that the deceased who was driving a Hyundai Accent saloon car
with number plate HASC04IM was ambushed and murdered by unknown gunmen
in a red Toyota Avalon saloon car.
An eyewitness account has it
that the gunmen who were armed with sophisticated weapons approached
their victim who was unaware that he was being trailed and in a harsh
tone asked him to step out of his car.
Worried by the order, the
deceased requested their identities, but rather than give it to him, one
of the three gunmen shot him on the leg, just as he also shot
sporadically into the air to scar onlookers who scampered for safety.
After this, Onyekele was shot to death. The gunmen then ran away from
the scene of the crime.
Speaking to Crime & Security on the
incident, the Imo State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr.
Andrew Enwerem, said that the police carried the body of the deceased to
the mortuary for autopsy.
Meanwhile the police, he said, have
commenced investigation into the death of Onyekele to determine those
who were involved into the attack.
